🎉 Happy Worker’s Day!

Happy Worker’s Day!

As we celebrate Worker’s Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on its powerful history—a story of courage, struggle, and the enduring fight for dignity in the workplace.

✊🏾 The Fight for the 8-Hour Workday

In the late 19th century, workers across the globe were engaged in a relentless struggle for humane working conditions—particularly the demand for an 8-hour workday. At the time, it was common for people to work 10 to 16 hours a day in unsafe environments. Deaths and injuries were frequent, prompting outcries and even literature like Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and Jack London’s The Iron Heel.

Though advocacy began as early as the 1860s, it wasn’t until the 1880s that organized labor was strong enough to demand change. Workers called for an 8-hour workday—without employer consent, but with the growing power of the working class behind them.

📚 The Haymarket Affair

One of the most pivotal moments came on May 4, 1886, during a demonstration in Chicago’s Haymarket Square. Workers rallied for the 8-hour day, but the peaceful protest turned tragic when a bomb was thrown into the crowd. In the chaos that followed, police opened fire, killing and injuring several people. This event became a landmark in labor history and is commemorated on Worker’s Day around the world.

Worker’s Day in Ghana

In Ghana, Worker’s Day is a celebration of the invaluable contributions of workers to national development. The day is marked with marches and parades led by various labor unions under the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Unlike some countries, the celebration in Ghana is largely apolitical—though there’s historical tension, such as the ban imposed by Prime Minister Dr. Busia’s administration.
